Vonnegut must really love the saying "so it goes" because it seems to appear in every other paragraph. I just keep getting the feeling that Vonnegut either does not buy the stories of others, and feels the need to share this with the reader by including "so it goes" or maybe he is not completely sold on his own story. I found myself not trusting him completely, it is hard to explain in words why I feel this way. An explanation would probably include many hand gestures, which I cannot convey over the internet. By the end of the reading I could not stand seeing the words "so it goes," I personally found it very annoying and unnecessary, but I am sure there is some purpose to it that I have just not discovered yet.

So it goes

urghh I hated that!!! Like I was just mocking it by the end. But I guess it does let you know not to trust everything you hear from others or Vonnegut himself. He wants to keep us open-minded and not easily swayed from one thing to another. But honestly he's beating a dead horse he needs to chill with the "so it goes"'s err
ReplyDeletei like the "so it goes"! i like casual narrative, and i think "so it goes" is the equivalent to something like "and yeah" or "but anyways". just a way to end a thought, nothing fancy, makes our job as readers a hell of a lot easier, too. it's almost as he's sparing us of lengthy descriptions.
ReplyDeletei also just think it's kind of cute. i think everything's cute.
I agree with Taylor. I think the "so it goes" gives us a nice break from the formality of writing that we normally read in English Classes. It makes it seem like Vonnegut is telling us personally a story instead of us reading a book that we have to in English Class. Although I also agree that it can get annoying at times, I understand why he uses it and appreciate the change of writing style.
ReplyDeleteim kinda confused on if it means so it goes as in "whatever" or SO it goes like "that's what i've heard and don't know if its true"...
